How to Paint Wood Furniture, Step by Step

We’ll show you how to paint furniture for the first time in four easy steps. Use it to make over an old table or dresser.

1 Prep

Take out any drawers and remove any fixings. Use a sponge and soapy water to clean the area, then let it dry.

2 Sand

Use medium-grit paper to sand the surface in a circle to get rid of any paint or stains that are already there and make it smooth. Do this on a floor that has paper on it. Wipe it down with a clean, wet cloth after sweeping away the dust.

3 First

Primer gets rid of old paint and makes a fresh base for paint to stick to. Check the paint to see what kind of primer it recommends. Protect the parts you don’t want to paint with painter’s tape. Place a fabric drop cloth on the floor in a well-ventilated area—an outdoor area with a roof is ideal—then apply primer. Allow primer to dry for at least 30 minutes and up to 4 hours.

4 Cover and paint

Paint in thin layers, and let each one dry completely before adding the next. You’ll need at least two coats of paint, and more for bright colours like orange and red. Put something on top of your piece, put back the drawers, or wait at least 72 hours for the paint to dry before doing any of those things.

Create a Flea Market Chic Look

For an old-fashioned, flea-market-chic look, use a natural-bristle brush to apply two lighter coats of paint and then one darker coat. Allow to dry for at least 24 hours.

With a mask on, slowly rub the surface with medium-grit sandpaper until the bottom coat comes off.

Make a look with patterns

To make the drawers look even better, put peel-and-stick geometric wallpaper inside them. Craft knives can be used to cut sheets to size. Then, take off the backing and press out air bubbles as you go from one corner to the next.
