As temperatures drop and winter sets in, many people turn to space heaters to keep their homes cozy. However, firefighters are sounding the alarm about a common mistake that could lead to disaster. According to experts, you should never plug a space heater into a power strip. The reason? Power strips aren’t designed to handle the high electrical current that space heaters require. This can cause overheating, damage, or even fires.
The warning comes from fire departments across the country, including one in Oregon that shared an urgent message on social media. They explained that power strips simply can’t manage the energy demands of a space heater, which can reach temperatures as high as 600 degrees Fahrenheit. Unfortunately, many homeowners remain unaware of this risk, as similar warnings have gone viral after house fires were linked to improper use of these devices.

To stay safe, always plug your space heater directly into a wall outlet. Keep it at least three feet away from anything flammable, like furniture, curtains, or carpets. Never leave a space heater running unattended, especially while sleeping, and make sure it’s placed on a flat, stable surface. Avoid using them on uneven areas like carpets or tables, as tipping over can also spark a fire.
Firefighters stress that space heaters themselves aren’t dangerous if used responsibly. The real issue lies in careless handling. Alongside proper usage, take steps to protect your home from electrical hazards. For instance, unplug appliances when they’re not in use, avoid damaged cords, and upgrade outdated electrical systems. If you notice signs of trouble—like scorch marks, burning smells, or frequent tripped breakers—address them immediately. Finally, ensure smoke detectors are installed and functioning in every room for added peace of mind.
