Dennehy, a top FBI agent, sent a defiant email to his staff, vowing to stand firm against what he described as an unjust attack on the agency. Dennehy’s message came after reports surfaced that the Trump administration was targeting FBI employees involved in investigations related to the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.
The Trump administration’s approach appears to follow a clear pattern: identify and remove individuals perceived as threats to the new regime. This includes federal employees, investigators, and even high-ranking officials who were simply doing their jobs. For Trump, loyalty to his agenda seems to outweigh competence or adherence to the law.
Democrats and liberals have criticized these actions as illegal, and the FBI is now fighting back. The bureau is working to protect its agents, particularly those involved in cases that have drawn Trump’s ire. Dennehy emphasized that the FBI would not stand by as good people were targeted for doing their jobs in accordance with the law.
The Justice Department has reportedly ordered the FBI to compile a list of employees involved in the January 6 investigations, raising concerns of an impending purge. If this list is used to terminate employees, it could result in thousands of job losses, with estimates suggesting up to 6,000 agents could be affected. Already, at least nine high-ranking officials have been removed from their positions.
Dennehy has urged FBI employees to remain calm and resolute in the face of these challenges. He praised two acting officials, Brian Driscoll and Robert C. Kissane, for their efforts to ensure a fair review process for each case, delaying firings and maintaining transparency. Despite the pressure, Dennehy confirmed that he has not been asked to resign and is committed to minimizing job losses within the bureau.
The FBI is also taking legal action to protect its employees. Agents have sued the Justice Department to prevent the use of collected data to justify firings, arguing that such actions would be illegal. This move comes after a similar purge of prosecutors who had worked on cases against Trump.
