Why Richard Gere Traded Hollywood for a Quieter Life in Spain

Richard Gere, the legendary actor known for films like Pretty Woman and Chicago, has decided to leave the United States after decades in the spotlight. The 74-year-old star is starting a new chapter—one that takes him far from Hollywood’s glitz and into the warm embrace of Spain.

Gere, who has always preferred a low-key lifestyle despite his fame, revealed in early 2024 that he and his wife, Spanish publicist Alejandra Silva, would be relocating to Madrid. “I’ve never lived permanently outside the U.S., so this is an exciting adventure,” he told Vanity Fair España. “Alejandra spent six years in my world—now it’s my turn to live in hers.”

The move wasn’t just about love. Gere has long admired Spain’s culture, praising its people, food, and joyful way of life. “There’s a warmth and generosity there that’s hard to find elsewhere,” he said. The decision also allows their two young sons to grow up immersed in their mother’s heritage.

To make the transition, Gere and Silva sold their Connecticut estate—a sprawling 32-acre property they’d purchased from musician Paul Simon. Though they took a slight loss on the sale, the couple saw it as a necessary step toward their new beginning.

For Gere, this isn’t just a change of scenery—it’s a deliberate choice to prioritize family, peace, and personal fulfillment over Hollywood’s relentless pace. After decades as an American icon, he’s ready to embrace a slower, richer life under the Spanish sun.
