The University of Wisconsin-Platteville community is grieving after a devastating incident in Wilgus Hall claimed the lives of two students. On May 19, 2025, campus police responded to reports of a shooting at the dormitory, where they discovered 22-year-olds Hallie Helms and Kelsie Martin with fatal gunshot wounds.
Authorities confirmed that Martin was transported to UW Hospital but did not survive. Helms was found deceased at the scene from what appeared to be a self-inflicted wound. Police Chief Hallman assured the public that there was no ongoing threat, calling it an isolated incident.

The university canceled final exams for the week and expanded mental health services, including overnight counseling. Martin, a psychology major and resident advisor, was remembered as a bright leader, while Helms, an education student, was described as creative and kind.
As investigations continue, questions arise about campus safety protocols. Meanwhile, both families have shared touching tributes online, celebrating the lives of their loved ones.
