The University of Wyoming community is mourning the sudden loss of three talented swimmers after a devastating car accident near the Colorado border. The victims—freshman Carson Muir, 18, from Alabama; sophomore Charlie Clark, 19, from Nevada; and junior Luke Slabber, 21, from South Africa—were members of the school’s swimming and diving team.

The crash occurred Friday afternoon at the intersection of Red Mountain Road and U.S. Highway 287. According to the Colorado State Patrol, the vehicle veered off the road and rolled multiple times, ejecting two passengers. While two other teammates survived with non-life-threatening injuries, the tragedy has left the campus in shock.
Investigators have not yet determined the exact cause of the accident but are examining factors such as speed, impairment, or distractions. University President Ed Seidel and Athletic Director Tom Burman expressed their profound grief, emphasizing counseling resources for students and staff. Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon also offered condolences, urging support for the victims’ families.
Though the athletes weren’t traveling for official team activities, their deaths serve as a heartbreaking reminder of life’s fragility. As the university rallies together, the focus remains on honoring the bright futures cut short.
