Have you noticed small red dots appearing on your arms or hands recently? While they might seem harmless at first glance, medical experts in the UK are urging people not to ignore them. These tiny marks could be a sign of scabies, a contagious skin condition that’s currently spreading across parts of the country.

Scabies is caused by microscopic mites that burrow under the skin, laying eggs and causing intense itching—especially at night. The rash often starts as small red spots, which can spread across the body if left untreated. Recently, doctors have reported a significant rise in cases, particularly in northern England, with schools and young adults being especially vulnerable due to close contact in social settings.
The condition spreads easily through skin-to-skin contact, shared clothing, or bedding. If you suspect you have scabies, it’s important to act quickly. Wash all clothing and bedding at 60°C (140°F) to kill the mites, or seal items in a plastic bag for at least three days if high-temperature washing isn’t possible.
Despite the discomfort and social stigma surrounding scabies, experts emphasize that seeking treatment is crucial. “Ignoring symptoms can lead to worse infections or prolonged suffering,” says Professor Kamila Hawthorne of the Royal College of General Practitioners. Over-the-counter creams and prescription treatments can help, but early action is key to preventing further spread.
If you or someone you know is dealing with unexplained itching and red spots, don’t hesitate to see a doctor. Addressing it early can save you—and those around you—from unnecessary discomfort.
