A Redditor shared a story on Reddit’s “AITA” subreddit on August 6, 2022. The user recounted an uncomfortable experience during a vacation with her husband’s family—a trip she had asked to join, even though she wasn’t originally invited.
“My husband’s family planned a vacation last week. Out of curiosity, I asked if I could come along. My husband seemed hesitant, but I told him it would be a great opportunity to get to know his family better. He eventually agreed, and though his family was surprised to see me, they still welcomed me,” she wrote.
On the third day of the vacation, while preparing a fruit salad, she overheard a conversation that left her stunned. Her mother-in-law said, “…did she really have nowhere else to spend the weekend?”
Uncertain who they were discussing, she then heard her husband reply, “I KNOW!!! And I didn’t want to bring her with me, but what was I supposed to do?!!! You know how pushy she can get.”
Realizing they were talking about her, she was devastated. “This whole time I was there, I cleaned, cooked, and looked after the kids, and this is how they think of me? An inconvenience?” she wrote, shocked by their words.
Unable to bear the situation, she immediately bought a ticket and flew back home on the first available plane. “He called and texted, but I only responded to let him know I was home. When he got back, he was furious, saying what I did was disrespectful and childish.”
“I told him I overheard his conversation with his mom, but he accused me of eavesdropping and said his family needed to warm up to me on their own terms. He blamed me for coming along in the first place and said leaving early made him and his family disappointed, giving them a bad impression of me.”
