Rare Black Canada Lynx Spotted on Camera for the First Time

The Canada Lynx, scientifically known as Lynx canadensis, is a wild feline native to the forests of North America, particularly in Canada and parts of the United States. Typically, these animals are known for their light brownish-gray coats that help them blend into their snowy environments. However, there have been rare reports of black-furred Canada Lynxes, although none had ever been captured on camera—until 2022.

In a remarkable stroke of luck, Thomas Jung, a researcher from the Yukon government, managed to capture footage of this elusive black-furred lynx near the city of Whitehorse in Canada’s Yukon territory. Armed with only his cellphone, Jung filmed the rare animal lounging calmly about 50 meters away in a quiet, rural area. The lynx eventually ran off after a nearby dog began barking, but not before Jung documented the groundbreaking sighting.

The discovery, detailed in the journal Mammalia under the title “Paint it black: first record of melanism in Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis),” gained widespread attention. Experts confirmed that the animal in the footage was indeed a Canada Lynx, despite the video’s grainy quality. The lynx displayed a black coat with patches of whitish-gray fur along its face and body, a striking contrast to the species’ usual appearance.

Canada Lynxes are generally solitary animals, and their silvery-gray winter coats allow them to remain camouflaged in snowy landscapes. During summer, their fur transitions to a reddish-brown hue. However, the black fur seen in this lynx, a result of melanism, is incredibly rare and not well understood.

According to Jung, such color variations can either help or hinder an animal’s survival. In the case of this lynx, its dark coat might make it more visible in the snow, reducing its ability to hunt effectively during winter. While the evolutionary implications of melanism in lynxes are still unclear, Jung suspects that it might be a disadvantage in this case.

The footage of this extraordinary animal has captivated scientists and nature enthusiasts alike. It’s incredible to think that such a rare lynx was caught on camera! Share your thoughts about this discovery in the comments below.
