A Mother’s Love: Overcoming Challenges with Her Rare Condition Baby

Jennie Wilklow’s pregnancy seemed like any other—routine checkups, reassuring doctor visits, and the excitement of welcoming a new life. But when she went into labor at 34 weeks, everything changed. An emergency C-section was performed, and her daughter, Anna, was born. At first, Jennie felt relief hearing the doctors say, “She’s so beautiful.” But moments later, the room fell silent.

Anna’s skin began to harden and crack within seconds, leaving her body covered in open sores. Jennie, still groggy from medication, was told her daughter had Harlequin ichthyosis, a rare genetic condition that causes the skin to grow 14 times faster than normal. The condition affects the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth, and many babies with it don’t survive past their first few days.

Jennie’s initial reaction was one of despair. “I thought it might be better if she died right then,” she admits. But Anna proved to be a fighter. With the support of her family and medical team, she survived and defied the odds.

Caring for Anna was no easy task. Jennie spent hours each day bathing her and applying petroleum jelly to her fragile skin. Despite the challenges, Jennie refused to limit her daughter’s potential. “I realized that if I set limitations on her, she would stay within them,” Jennie says. “I decided to set the bar high and let her achieve whatever she wanted.”
