Donald Trump’s luxurious Turnberry golf resort in Scotland has been officially excluded from hosting The Open Championship, one of golf’s most prestigious tournaments. Despite the former U.S. president’s persistent efforts to bring the event to his Ayrshire course, organizers have firmly rejected the idea.
The R&A, which oversees The Open, cited potential security risks and protests tied to Trump’s controversial political profile as key reasons for their decision. While Trump has invested nearly $200 million into upgrading Turnberry—transforming it into what he calls the “No. 1-rated course in Europe”—the association remains unmoved.
In 2023, Trump confidently claimed that “everybody wants to see The Open here,” referencing endorsements from golf industry veterans like former R&A CEO Peter Dawson. Yet, the tournament has continued to bypass Turnberry, opting for less politically charged venues.
Trump’s team maintains that the resort’s world-class design and maintenance should outweigh any external concerns. But for now, the course remains on the sidelines, its future as an Open host uncertain.
