Skydiving Community Mourns Loss of Beloved Instructor in Tragic Accident

The skydiving world is heartbroken after the sudden passing of Devrey Jane LaRiccia-Chase, a 28-year-old instructor who died following a rare and devastating accident at Skydive Perris in California. Known for her infectious energy and love for the sport, Devrey’s life was cut short when she encountered an unexpected “dust devil”—a small but powerful whirlwind—during her landing. The violent spin caused by the phenomenon made her parachute uncontrollable, leading to a tragic fall.

Though she survived the initial impact, Devrey succumbed to her injuries shortly after. Her husband, professional athlete Freddy Chase, shared an emotional tribute online, calling her his “soul, love, and everything.” The outpouring of support from friends, family, and fellow skydivers has been overwhelming, with a GoFundMe campaign quickly surpassing $53,000 to help bring her home to Maine for her final rest.

Devrey will be remembered not just for her skill in the sky, but for the joy and fearlessness she brought to everyone around her.
